Cloud Rat – Moksha LP
January 22, 2013
Halo of Flies

Mount Pleasant, MI

Cloud Rat’s self-titled LP and their split with Republic of Dreams were punishing slabs of grindcore inflected with astute amounts of melody and shades of screamo. ‘Aroma’ continues on that path but first opens with a juddering slow passage and Madison’s now so recognisable vocals before erupting into a terse barrage of furious grind. There are very few bands doing what Cloud Rat are doing and doing it so well.
– Jonathan Keane, The Grind That Annoys
There’s no doubt in my mind that these guys and gal are going to get their “big break” soon, and become more than just underground grind titans. Everything from their stupidly good live performance, to the stunning quality of their music and recordings, this band has it all.
– Operation Grindcore
Michigan grindcore punks CLOUD RAT are ready to exorcise the wickedest of demons with their newest album, MOKSHA, to be released by HALO OF FLIES RECORDS on January 22. Ferocious and unrelenting, Moksha is a record infused with doses of melody and bludgeoning heaviness, tortured vocals and lyrics that dig up harsh memories. Still, through the jaws of darkness, Cloud Rat manages to salvage an ounce of hope within it all.

The members of Cloud Rat had been cutting their teeth in Mount Pleasant for less than a year when they released their self-titled debut in 2010. While relatively new to the international metal scene, Cloud Rat has been quickly and loudly making its presence known. A widely-praised 2012 split with Republic of Dreams has only increased the band’s momentum. The fierce radical idealogies present in its music create an aural onslaught with substance instead of a political statement.

“We aren’t afraid to experiment with new sounds and ideas, but not so much that we lose sight of what we are predominantly: punks playing really fast.”

Cloud Rat is an American grindcore punk band.

Adrian, Madison, and Rorik formed the band on a whim in December 2009 at a punk house in a small college town known as Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The initial idea was to create the filthiest, most emotionally-charged grindcore possible. But after a few practices, their other influences started creeping in, and they knew that there would be more to this band than just a few blastbeats and shouted vocals.

Musically, they are influenced by all the punk and metal greats, as well as grunge, goth/new wave, hip-hop, rock and roll, jazz, shoegaze, on and on and on. Lyrically, the songs shift between personal and sociopolitical topics (often painful and explicit dealing with issues of drugs, neglect, emotional/physical/sexual violence, abandonment, poverty, racism/sexism/homophobia, etc), usually delivered poetically rather than straightforward. They firmly believe in a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle, radical feminism, and positive social change through tolerance, respect, awareness, and compassion.

They have released a self-titled LP (2010), split cassette/LP with Xtra Vomit (2010/2012 respectively), split 7” with Autarkeia (2011), split LP with Republic of Dreams(2012), and are soon to release a full length LP entitled “Moksha” and a split 7” with Orgullo Primitivo, both in 2013. Cloud Rat has toured the USA multiple times, Canada, and are hitting Europe March 4th – April 7th 2013.
